A General Description of Qigong

Qigong is an ancient Chinese Practice which consists of a variety of still as well as moving meditative methods. Simple and gentle movements and exercises, combined with visualization, direct the flow of life force energy or Qi (Chi) into and through the body. Qi literally means energy or vital life force and Gong means work, method, practice as well as cultivation.

This practice is based upon the Chinese philosophy that a powerful energy system (Qi/Chi) exists within the body and flows through energy pathways referred to as meridians and channels. Vital life energy is conveyed to every cell, organ, muscle, and bodily system via these meridians. If the chi patterns are disrupted by physical or mental stress, emotional distress, environmental exposures or a variety of other factors, a person becomes susceptible to disease. Health is restored when this disruption of energy or Qi is restored.

Qigong is one way to restore this balance in the body. It is a self-healing practice that enhances health, slows aging, promotes relaxation, calms the mind, and increases well-being. It is widely used in China as a form of preventative medicine, as well as a form of treatment for many diseases and conditions.

Note : There are varying spellings of the Qigong that have been used in the process of converting the pictorial Chinese language into the Romanized characters used in the West. As a result you will often see the word ‘Qi’ spelt as ‘Chi’ and the word ‘Gong’ spelt as ‘Kung’, using the old Wade Giles system. Throughout this site we use the more modern Pinyin system which joins the two words together to create ‘Qigong’.

Taijiquan (Tai Chi)Tai Ji Quan itself a form of Qigong, is one of the three Chinese 'Soft' or 'Internal' traditional Chinese martial arts and apopular system of mind body exercise that improves balance, coordination, flexibility, muscular strength and cardiovascular health. Taijiquan generally involves relaxed, calm and gentle movements that a performed slowly and continuously. It is gentle enough to be practiced by the elderly and infirm yet demanding enough to be challenging to the fittest of athletes. Often referred to as Tai Chi in the West the Chinese treasure of Taijiquan is now popular across the world and its health benefits have been the subject of considerable scientific research.  Our Tai Chi classes focus generally on the Yang Style 24 Posture form of movements.
